UCY STUDENTS GAIN FIRSTS AGAINST THE ODDS

The University Centre Yeovil (UCY) is celebrating after 26% of its part and full time Honours degree students’ gained firsts, well above the national average of 12%*.

A very high percentage of students studying for the BSc in Sustainable Graphics & Packaging Design attained First Class Degrees. This course is unique to the UCY and focuses on developing sustainable methods of packaging for goods, as well as including underlying design modules. With increasing pressure on companies to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging, demand for these graduates is growing rapidly.

In addition, students on the popular BA (Hons) English & History course were among those who gained excellent results.

BA (Hons) Business & Management students also achieved First Class Honours Degrees.  Graduates of this course provide the local economy with valuable, highly-skilled employees who will help to sustain and develop the local economy through current financial hardships.

Many of the students have young families or work commitments and genuinely benefit from the opportunity to study locally and part-time.  Students have accredited their success to the unique atmosphere of the University Centre.

Zoe Dixon (21) of Wincanton, who gained a first in Business & Management, said “Studying at the UCY was a really great experience for me.  There were lots of one-to-ones with staff and the tutors were really keen to help.  This level of support was really helpful as I have a young family.”

Jane Hobbs (35) of Beaminster also achieved a first in Business & Management.  She said “The UCY is really good The staff are very supportive and I found it an excellent way of studying for a degree locally.”

The UCY prides itself on its friendly atmosphere and small intimate study groups, allowing students’ to develop their skills in a structured and supportive environment so they have the freedom to express themselves and fulfil their potential.

The importance of local Higher Education centres is growing as more students need to reduce the cost of going to university and balance family and work commitments alongside education.  The UCY offers the perfect opportunity for those who wish to enhance their career potential without going away to university.  The UCY is an excellent choice for those that are looking to improve their skills base without leaving the local area and those who will benefit from a smaller, supportive university environment.

The UCY currently has a limited number of places for September 2009 entry, which will be available in clearing in mid August.  For more information, visit www.ucy.ac.uk.

The UCY will be formally celebrating all its students’ successes at the UCY Graduation Ceremony 2009 in late October.
