HEROES AND INSPIRATIONS AT THE ALTERNATIVE ENGLISH & HISTORY AWARDS
Students studying BA (Hons) English & History at the University Centre Yeovil (UCY) recently celebrated a year of achievement with an ‘alternative’ awards ceremony.
The theme for the evening was ‘Heroes and Inspirations’ and everyone got in the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as notable characters and personalities, past, present and future. They included Robin Hood, Pocahontas, Kate Adie, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Zorro and Yeovil Town Manager, Terry Skiverton.
A string of awards were handed out, voted for by the students themselves. They included Peer of the Year, which went to Zoe MacFarlane (23) of Yeovil, Student Rep of the Year, awarded to Jenny Bendell (39) of Gillingham, Favourite Dissertation, received by Eileen Thurston (78) of Broadstone and Critic of the Course, awarded to Louisa Schofield (28) of Ilminster. Andrew Foot (24) of Sherborne received the Film Buff of the Year award, while the Super Survivor title went to Natalie Beer (23) of Broadstone. Awards in History went to Rebecca Barnes (20) of Chard and Joanna Bentom (48) of Castle Cary.
Level 5 student Katy Bromige (21) of Yeovil and Level 6 students Tim Ayre (21) of Yeovil and Dawn Trimmer (40) of Weymouth were named Students of the Year.
BA (Hons) English & History Programme Leader Sandra Braddick said “This was a delightful way to celebrate the end of a year of hard work which has produced exciting results and research. The staff were keen to celebrate the range of independent work done for dissertations, as well as the sheer dedication and enthusiasm of the students, some of whom have managed to complete the course against incredible personal odds.”
For this year’s dissertations, students have explored subjects as diverse as Character Transformation in the work of Alice Walker, Gender in Children’s Fiction and the Use of London as a Gothic Setting in Late Victorian Fiction. There was also outstanding work by students during taught modules, which included Shakespeare, Cinema and Society, 19th Century, Russian in Revolution, Gender, Writing and Difference and Crime and Punishment.
