UCY Students win Design Awards

Top University Centre Yeovil (UCY) Design students Marie Nicholson from Crewkerne and Richard Oborne from Yeovil have both scooped gold awards at the International Starpack awards.

Starpack is the premier UK annual scheme recognising innovation in packaging design and technology with separate awards schemes for industry, students and schools.

Richard’s winning design was a series of multi purpose packaging for Costa which was 100% biodegradable, used no glue in it's construction, was shipped flat and built in the shop to save space, they also open up into a circular plate shape to collect any crumbs. Marie’s design was a take away lunch time pack, packaging three food items from a healthy lifestyle range in one easy to carry and easy to use container.

Both winners were delighted with their achievements and praised the support of staff and family “I didn't think I would win; we had a look at last year's entries and there were some amazing designs. I had to re-make all of my mock ups at the very last minute as I had left some construction lines on them; I then I had trouble with the printing of my new mock ups and to make things even more complicated; I had ran out of carton board. It wasn't till the day we had to send off our mock ups that I managed to get some more carton board, all the time my lecturer kept saying how by just making my mock ups that little bit better it would pay off, and it did!” Richard Oborne.

“I was thrilled and excited to win the gold award, it made all the many hours of hard work worth while, if it had not have been for our great tutors and my wonderful family who have supported me all the way I do not think I would have achieved so much and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all.” Marie Nicholson

The UCY and it’s students have enjoyed success at the Starpack awards on many occasions over the years
Lloyd Richards, Faculty Director Creative and Performing Arts, said “We were very impressed with the quality of the students’ work and we’re delighted that they’ve gained such a high level of recognition for their efforts at national and international level. And we are excited about what innovative designs our next cohort of students will develop in the coming academic year.”

Both winning students are studying the Sustainable Graphics and Packaging Design degree at the UCY, this qualification focuses on Graphic Design and Packaging Design incorporating the growing issues of sustainability and is one of the UCY’s many courses that allow students to study for a degree locally whilst remaining locally to reduce the cost of education and remain close to their family.
