Following on from the success of the last years Three Peaks Challenge students will again set out to test themselves on this adventure during the late spring/early summer of 2012. Below is the story of last years challenge.
Two University Centre Yeovil (UCY) students and two members of staff have taken on the 3 Peaks Challenge raising £728.20 for cancer research.
Students Charlie Hocking and Mark Crump, and lecturers Dave Howell and Jean Carter, undertook the 3 Peaks Challenge on Friday 20 May. The group set off from Yeovil and headed for Scotland spending Friday night in a bunk house near Ben Nevis and started their Challenge on the Saturday lunchtime. The group fought extreme weather and challenging climbs completing the challenge Sunday afternoon in a time of 28hrs & 7secs.
This expedition was partly funded by the Bournemouth University Student Union (SUBU) as part of the partnership between UCY and BU. This partnership allows students to study a degree or foundation degree in Yeovil but receive a BU degree on completion and have access to all BU’s resources.
Charlie, Mark, Dave and Jean have all said that they hope to undertake the Challenge again next year with a larger group of students with Charlie also commenting, 'I am raising money for this charity for personal reasons having already lost one Grandparent to cancer and seeing another Grandparent currently doing battle with it. We may not be able to help them but we can help support research to help those in the future that are affected by it.'
HE Student Liaison Officer, Helen Nourse, dedicated Student Union contact who helps coordinate student events and aid access to funds from BU said ‘This was a mighty achievement by both staff and students. We support and encourage students with a variety of activities but it is always great when they can raise funds for charity at the same time and we are very proud.’
