HNC & HND Aerospace Engineering

Our aim is to provide military personnel with the opportunity to achieve their full potential and gain a work related higher level qualification.

Most of the programme allows learners to retain significant levels of employment whilst studying. The delivery is through a variety of blended learning options, including: virtual learning environment (VLE), distance learning package (MOODLE), on-site support - from assessor/mentors and regular tutorial sessions from Yeovil College Staff.

This not only helps to reduce learner attendance but it also provides opportunities to study whilst on detachment and fit in with employment, social and domestic commitments.

The qualification can be studied within a flexible time frame, which includes study over a full calender year and is a roll-on, roll-off programme.

The programme can make a difference to the learners experience by providing  the opportunity to progress career development to gain a higher education qualification that will be vocationally relevant.

WHAT YOU WILL GET FROM THE PROGRAMME

You will be part of a significant tri-service military aerospace engineering programme that will enable technician level personnel and others to gain higher level qualifications by referencing previous technical knowledge and vocational training, using either APEL (accredited prior experiential earning) and/or (APCL) accredited prior certificated learning)

DETAILS OF UNITS

To complete an HNC you must successfully achieve 5 H1 units and 5 H2 units and for the HND top-up a further 3 H1 and 3 H2 units.

Regardless of trade, the following core units must be successfully completed.

CORE UNITS:
Unit 1: Business Management Techniques H1
Unit 2: Analytical Methods for Engineers H1
Unit 3: Engineering Science H1
Unit 4: Aircraft System Principles H2
Unit 5: Project H2

These will be followed by a further 5 options units for HNC with 6 more units required for the HND top-up.

A significant number of units have been referenced for Accreditation for prior Learning (APL) and technician level students will usually be able to APL approximately 55% of the programme, but if they wish they may choose other units to suit their career ambitions, which could require further assignments.

Upon completion of the HNC advice will be given on choice of units for progression to HND

THE BENEFITS OF APEL/APCL

•  Flexible learning and delivery strategies to suit  deployment and detachment
• Approximately 55% APEL/APCL available
• MOODLE distance learning package available to support study
• Blended learning units supported by regular tutorials on site and MOODLE
• Regular Drop-in sessions on site with Avionic/Mechanical Assessor/Mentors in support
• Other military sites on programme, willing to share evidence
• Proven record over the last nine years with REME Aviation, Fleet Air Arm and RAF
• Significant numbers of MOD personnel successfully gaining the qualification
• Approved Official Provider for the Enhanced Learning Credit Scheme - number 1345

FAQ’s

Q
What if I am concerned with my Maths and Science ability when returning to education?
A
Yeovil College offers regular tutorials on base, on-line support, Moodle, e-mail and telephone contact. You are not required to work alone, but to work within groups on your base and contact other sites on programme.

Q
Can I change some of the option units?
A
Initially the units were chosen to establish the ‘best fit’ for trade, to get the greatest amount of APL evidence, but if student’s identify unit(s) they wish to substitute because they feel it supports their career requirements better then this is acceptable.

Q
Is it possible to upgrade my HNC to an HND?
A
The programme is Edexcel BTEC (NQF) and providing you have studied on an aerospace option you may update a partial or complete HNC to HND.

Q
What if I cannot provide evidence of work I have carried out?
A
There are four types of evidence:
o Initial Training Notes
o Local Training Notes(LTNs)
o Personal evidence gained from technical knowledge and vocational training courses
o Work-based evidence

Depending where you are in your career will establish the amount of APL evidence available to you.

Q
Can I progress to a degree after completing the HND?
A
At this time a survey is being carried out to determine whether there is demand for progression, and providing this is established then the proposal is that an Honours pathway will be available from September 2010.

What is my next step....?

You will need to speak to the PLA (based in the Education/Learning Centre) on your base. S/he will give you the enrolments forms and assist with applying for your ELC funding.
