BA Honours degree in English and History

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding, their skills of critical analysis and evaluation and their ability to articulate what they know, creating the desire to continue enjoying and experiencing historical and literary criticism study long after the course has been completed.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for anyone with a real interest in all aspects of English and History study, and who has the enthusiasm, commitment and discipline to meet the demanding challenges such study presents.

What will I study?

Level 4:
• What is History?
• The World Turned Upside Down
• What is English?
• Introduction to Western Thought

Level 5:
• 19th century Writing
• The Cause, Courses and Consequence of the French Revolution

Two units from:

• Victorian Britain
• Russia in revolution 1894-1939
• All the worlds a stage: Shakespeare Cinema and Society
• It’s Only Words: the Literary & the Social-Linguistic

NB. Modules are subject to availability and review.

Level 6:
• Representation in British National Cinema
• Writing and Difference
• Cold War to Hot war? Super power Relations from 1945-1981
• Crime and Punishment 1830 - 1970
• Dissertation

How will i be taught?
The BA (Hons) English and History course is based at the UCY and is delivered by way of lectures and seminars, group discussions, outside speakers, films, visits to appropriate venues, such as local Records Offices, and presentations. Timetables vary from year to year.

How will I be assessed?
• Level 4: Portfolios of work built up over the duration of the unit, essays, local study project, an annotated      bibliography, presentations, unit tests and examination

• Level 5: Essays, presentations, portfolio of work, unit tests and examination

• Level 6: Essays, presentations and examination.  The dissertation is an opportunity for students to pursue     areas of personal interest.

Where could this course lead?
Many of our students choose to go on to become teachers, either by undertaking an appropriate PGCE or by applying to the Graduate Teacher Training Scheme SCITTS. Skills developed on the BA English and History course, including the ability to critically analyse and evaluate material, to prioritise information, to write clearly and effectively, are those much sought after in a wide range of employment areas. Graduates with these skills build careers in management, the armed forces, administration and market research.
