‘COLLECTIVE’ ART ON SHOW AT BISHOP’S PALACE, WELLS

An exhibition of student artwork will be on display at the Bishop’s Palace, Wells, between Saturday 13th September and Friday 9th October 2009.  Entitled ‘Collective’, it will feature work by four University Centre Yeovil (UCY) students currently studying for degrees in Fine Art and include paintings in oils, acrylics and mixed media, photomontage, printmaking, etching, silk screen, stained and fused glass and bespoke, handmade furniture.

Somerset-based Nina Gronw-Lewis specialises in working with glass and has produced some exciting new work for the exhibition, including some of her largest pieces to date.  She has been working with dancers and other performers, photographing their movements.  She said “I use the photographs in my designs.  By using resists and masking, I can sandblast the glass to leave the design permanently etched on the surface.  It’s a new and exciting process.  The tools are very industrial and the design is very graphics or illustration-based, but my knowledge of screen printing has helped me to produce these large works.”  Ms Gronw-Lewis has been studying for a Foundation degree in Fine Art part-time at the UCY for a year, which has allowed her to continue working and complete her studies.

Bharati Pardhy has worked as an artist for most of her life, as well as a singer and song writer.  She gained a distinction in her Foundation in Fine Art qualification before embarking on her degree in Contemporary Fine Art, which she is finding stimulating and challenging.  For this exhibition, Ms Pardhy has explored the creative process of making music, exploring the rhythms of the world around us.  She has created evocative pieces using her skills in photography and fine art.  She said “I have explored the theme in many different ways using a wide variety of media and methods to express subject, mood and feeling in a way which resonates with the viewer.  I spent many hours drawing, sketching and taking photographs at musical events over several months to inform my work.  My work is also part inspired by the painter Wassily Kandinsky and his writings on the inextricable link between music and art.”

Kate Plowman studied her Foundation course at Yeovil College before starting the Foundation degree in Fine Art at the UCY.  The Bishop’s Palace exhibition marks the end of her first year of degree-level study.  She has many years’ experience as a practicing artist and has developed from a specialism in painting and mosaic to a variety of other processes and materials.  She said “I am enjoying being able to respond to the moment and my use of materials and processes is developing at a pace!  This latest exhibition shows my work with digital images, processes, layering and manipulating the image and then adding paint.”

Dorset-based Lisa Dear also studied at Yeovil College before studying Fine Art at the UCY.  She said “My main inspiration comes from travelling with horses and this is very much reflected in my work.  In this latest exhibition, you can see some of the photography that expresses my way of life.”

The Bishop’s Palace exhibition will run from Saturday 13th September and Friday 9th October 2009, 11am to 6pm Sunday to Friday and 11am to 2pm on Saturdays.  An admission fee applied to the Palace and gardens.  There will be a ‘Meet the Artists’ afternoon on Sunday 20th September from 4pm to 7pm.

Ms Gronw-Lewis said “We have all exhibited before, but this is special as it’s the first time we’ve all exhibited together and at such a prestigious venue.  The Bishop’s Palace, Wells, is such a stunning setting, we are thrilled.”
