Higher Education Qualifications:

Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Diplomas (HND)

These are awarded by Edexcel. The Certificate is a Level 4 qualification, equivalent to the first year of a degree, and is usually studied part-time. The Diploma is a Level 5 qualification, equivalent to the first two years of a degree and is usually studied full-time over two years. The HND often enables progression to the final year of a degree.

Foundation Degrees

These are similar to HNDs but are validated by a university. They are Level 5 qualifications which enable progression to the final year of a degree or a bespoke top-up degree. They may be studied either full-time or part-time. Students successfully passing the foundation degree are entitled to use the letters FdA (arts based) or FdSc (science based) to denote their qualification.

Top-Up Degrees

These are Level 6 qualifications designed for students with foundation degrees, and often HNDs, to undertake one further year of full-time study (part-time is also possible) in order to obtain a full honours degree.

Master’s Degrees

These are designed for students who already have an honours degree or equivalent who wish to take their study to a higher level. They are classed as Level 7 programmes and are available on a full and part-time basis.
