UCY Sports Students Release Disability Handbook

Students with new disability handbook

Students at the University Centre Yeovil (UCY) have released a Disability Sports Handbook, providing information for sport and leisure opportunities in the South West of England. The group consisting of nine students are currently studying for a Foundation degree in Sports Development and Coaching, and were given the responsibility of researching and designing the handbook as part of their course.

This handbook aims to benefit the whole of the South West with regards to disability sports information and provision. The pack contains critical information on organisations, contacts and events as well as informative articles on disability sport.

The students were also successful for sponsorship and fundraising to make this project feasible and to this end engaged the support of: The Wey Valley Mazda Organisation, Fine Grind Products, Café Oasis all from Weymouth. Brotherwood Automobility Limited from Sherborne, and PC World in Yeovil. The students would like to thank all of these companies with their donations and help, without which it would have been impossible to have published this handbook.

The project has involved hundreds of contacts with organizations and individuals requiring phone calls, emails and meetings to gather the required information for this handbook by the students.

"Hopefully this document will provide information about disability sport in the community for opportunities to participate in sport and exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to promote social well being." - student representative

"This project has provided our students with a realistic and worth while exercise. It has proven to be of mutual benefit as the students develop professional skills whilst providing a document that will benefit the community." - Chris Burton, department head of Sport and Leisure at Yeovil College
