Diploma in Teaching English in the Life Long Learning Sector

The Government’s ‘Skills for Life’ strategy for improving adult literacy skills is committed to raising the level of qualification for all adult literacy teachers in the country. This Diploma gives individual practitioners a continuing professional development route to complete application of NQF Level 4 and NQF Level 5 LLUK Professional Standards for Teachers of English (Literacy).

Who is this course for?
This programme is for current practitioners who wish to complete the application of the LLUK Professional Standards for Teachers of English (Literacy and ESOL), at NQF Level 4 and NQF Level 5 through a continuing professional development route.

What will I study?
• Literacy and the learners - 20 credits (NQF level 4)
• Literacy theories and frameworks - 20 credits (NQF level 5)
• Literacy learning and teaching - 20 credits (NQF level 5)

How will I be taught?
Weekly three-hour lectures will take place and you will be expected to support this with your own study. You will also have access to a virtual learning site environment specifically designed for this course. Students will receive additional support through a system of tutorials.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through presentations, assignments and a minimum of three observations of professional practice. Students will also be expected to maintain a Professional Development Portfolio throughout the course, which will be reviewed by your specialist assessor prior to each observed practice session.

Where could this course lead?
On successful completion, you can progress to the Foundation degree in Education and Training and subsequently the BA (Hons) Education and Training.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a professional teaching qualification such as the Certificate in Education, PGCE, PCET or equivalent, and a minimum of 75 hours professional practice in an adult literacy teaching and learning environment (including experience of group teaching and teaching across more than one core curriculum level. 80% of your practice must be subject specific. Evidence of Level 3 Personal Skills in English and CRB clearance are also required.
