The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Electrical/Electronic Engineering was developed in consultation with local industry to meet their Electrical/Electronic requirements.

The 10 unit award provides an appropriate technical education for a range of technical and management careers in engineering. It also provides specialist studies which are directly relevant to individual employers in which learners are currently working or in which they intend to seek employment.

The qualification also provides flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for progression to graduate and post graduate studies.
For all learners of any age the BTEC Higher National Certificate allows the development of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

National Certificate or Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
If you have appropriate industrial experience you will be considered for admission on an individual basis.

Duration

The course is over 2 Years each year being 28 weeks of guided learning.
The mode of attendance is day release.
A typical day consists of a total of 5 sessions of 1.5 guided learning hours There are break periods and lunch times in addition.

Careers prospects/Progression

On successful completion learners can progress to an HND Electronics Engineering or graduate studies at a University.

How will I be assessed?

All units are internally assessed. All assessment is criterion referenced based on the achievement of specified learning outcomes. Each unit has specified criteria which are used for grading. A summative unit grade can be awarded at a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Learners who complete a unit but who do not meet all the pass criteria are graded unclassified.
The purpose of assessment is to ensure that effective learning of the content of each unit has taken place. Evidence of this learning is required for each unit. All assessments are assignment based and there are no formal exams.

Course content/units

The Higher National Certificate requires you to gain 10 units in order to gain an Award. There are 5 core units and 5 specialist units as follows :-
Year 1

  • Analytical Methods for Engineers.
  • Engineering Science
  • Electronics
  • Combinational and Sequential Logic
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles

Year 2

  • Project
  • Microprocessor Systems
  • Control Systems and Automation
  • Business Management Techniques
  • Engineering Design

Course Expenses

You will be required to pay a registration fee when you enrol to the awarding body Edexcel/BTEC . The registration is valid for 5 years.
A book list will be issued during induction.
