Duration

The course is studied over one year, typically from October to May on a day release basis, approx 28 days in total per year. Possibly from 8-30am to 6-30pm. Studying six units during the day, 1.5hours per unit.

HND Mechanical Engineering


The 16 unit award provides an appropriate technical education for a range of technical and management careers in engineering. It also provides specialist studies which are directly relevant to job roles in which learners are currently working or in which they intend to seek employment. 10 points will have already been achieved by those entering the course with an HNC.

Who is this course for?
The course is designed to complement the industrial training of apprentices/trainees preparing for related technician occupations and to provide a broader specialist knowledge and experience on top of the HNC Qualification: for the Higher Technician occupations..

What will I study?
Course content/Units
• Design for Manufacture
• Advanced CAD
• Advanced Manufacturing Technology
• Application of Pneumatics and Hydraulics
• Fluid Mechanics

And one further unit will be offered to the group, to make up the six;
typically:

• Planning and Scheduling Principles or
• Project Management or
• Quality Management
dependant on the group.

How will I be taught?
There are 3 units that have 3.5 hours of guided learning and the remaining 3 units are directed study. Learners are encouraged to do as much private study as possible throughout the course.

How will I be assessed?
All assessments are assignment based and there are no formal exams. All units are internally assessed. All assessment is criterion referenced based on the achievement of specified learning outcomes.

Where could this course lead?
Higher Technician occupations, progression onto a Degree course.
