There Are No Typical Students At The UCY!

No typical students

A recent survey carried out by the University Centre Yeovil (UCY) revealed that UCY students were a diverse bunch with a wide range of backgrounds, aspirations and personal circumstances.

This is great news with regard to Government aims to widen participation in Higher Education and demonstrates that UCY is addressing local educational needs and increasing the skills of the local workforce.

Despite the diversity of findings there was, however, commonality in students' reasons for choosing UCY as many have experienced the same previous barriers to education and share similar concerns about adapting to a Higher Education environment.

The comprehensive survey was conducted by Tracy Caller, Research and Information Officer at SSDC, and has been useful in identifying how students are supported by the community and local employers. Employment was identified as an important part of student life, as many students intend to work for more than 20 hours per week whilst completing their course.

This survey is part of a wider partnership research project, between the UCY & SSDC, to identify how the UCY can best offer higher education to suit local needs and continue their contribution to raising skills levels in the area.
