Case Study

George Smith (Phd)
What did you do before coming to the UCY?
Part-time teacher at Millfield School (Independent School for children
aged 13-18 with associate Prep School for children aged 2-13) I teach
Psychology A level – was employed to teach existing AS course and
assist set up the new A2 course.
Also manage rental properties in
Yeovil & Crewkerne. Prior to teaching I did academic research in
Psychology at Cardiff Uni.
What do you do now?
Same! With a few more teaching responsibilities.
What do you most like about your course?
Contact
with academia that otherwise seemed distance. The study centre's
support was excellent – links to University lending libraries and
online reference material. I also liked comparing notes with other
mature students in the same position – having a group to commiserate
with.
The added awareness it gave me about the profession I had
entered. One of the most startling discoveries was that my exam board
based its question methods directly on a theory of assessment that we
covered during the course. This gave me a much greater insight into
what the exam board was asking in its questions.
What have you found most challenging during your course?
Time
management! My responsibilities seemed to increase tremendously –
perhaps because I became more aware of professional development – and
that made meeting the course's requirements tough. Pastoral staff were
very accommodating with this.
What would you say to potential students?
Accessible engaging and enthusiastic lecturers and students made learning the "trade" a pleasure.
