What is SUBU?

SUBU stands for 'The Students' Union at Bournemouth University'. The Students' Union is similar to a trade union in that it is here to speak up for you to the University/UCY (rather than the employer).

Helen Norse - UCY Student Liaison Officer

Student Liaison Officer - Helen Nourse

The role of the Higher Education (HE) Student Liaison Officer is to ensure a co-ordinated approach to the support of HE Students based at the UCY.  I co-ordinate routine communication between the UCY and the Student Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU).  I am responsible for training and supporting the Student Representatives and for signposting all HE students to appropriate places for advice and guidance as needed.  I also facilitate the development of social events, clubs and societies for students based at the UCY and encourage students to become active participants in the wider community.

I work 15 hours per week term time only; the days differ from week to week in order that I am available to all students on a regular basis.  My schedule is posted on the SUBU notice board in the UCY cafe.  I am based in the Study Area on the ground floor at the UCY.

What is the number of current Members?

15,500

How is the SU made up?

SUBU is guided by an elected committee of students (the executive committee) who work with the Union's 32 full-time and anything up to 150 part-time staff.

What are the benefits of joining the student union?

You have access to an independent organisation that has strong relationships/influence with the University. Membership is free and automatic unless you choose otherwise.. Discounts are available nationally by purchasing an NUS Extra card via www.nusextra.co.uk .

How can I get involved as a UCY student?

You can volunteer to be a student rep, interact with the SUBU representative, the HE Student Liaison Officer based at the UCY or you could set up your own club & society

What help can SUBU give UCY students?

The union also offers help & advice and at Talbot Campus offers opportunities in clubs & societies, media and volunteering. All of SUBUs' representation & support services are fully available via the Student Liaison Officer, email and phone. SUBU can also facilitate and advise a UCY social committee if one were to form.

What are the main differences for students at the UCY compared to BU Talbot campus?

SUBU's main offices and commercial services are based in Bournemouth, which UCY students are more than welcome to use. However, other than being able to meet face-to-face, SUBU via the Student Liaison Officer can still offer all of the support/representation to UCY students that is available at Talbot Campus.

What activities/events have the union organised over the last year?

SUBU organises a vast range of activities/events over the year, these include entertainment events and campaigns. SUBU is probably more famous for its 'ents' type events,
