University Centre Yeovil Celebrates Star Designers

The University Centre Yeovil (UCY) is celebrating the success of three Foundation Degree CAD Graphics & Packaging students at the recent 'Starpack Awards', organised by The Institute of Packaging and presented in Leicester. Success was confirmed in this national competition for UCY students Neil Gooch, Wesley Dowell and Jamie Gallimore against 245 entries from students across the country.
Neil, who moved to Yeovil from Bracknell because of the specialist nature of the course at the University
Centre, gained the Bronze award for his creative metal packaging design sponsored by Marks and Spencers. Jamie Gallimore, from Yeovil, gained a bronze award in the Britvic Sponsored Soft Drinks Bottle Icon design, in which fellow student Wesley Dowell, from Lyme Regis, gained a Silver Award.
Wesley thanked the staff at the UCY for the help and support that he has received, Saying that "This has been a great opportunity on a fantastic course where I've had the chance to develop my skills in a relaxed but highly creative environment"
Graphics & Packaging Lecturer Melinda Watson said "This is the second year that our students have had their hard work and determination recognised through the Starpack Awards. What is most impressive is that our students are only in the second year of their course, when all other winners have been in their third year."
Anthony Hackforth, chairman of the Student Starpack 2006 judging panel, said, "We were delighted by the record number of entries, it really proves that the message of the importance of packaging as a discipline has not only filtered through the educational system, but is also being proactively included in the classroom"
